Aviatik C.III

role : two-seat armed reconnaissance and artillery observation

first flight : operational : May 1916

country : Germany

design :

production : 80 aircraft (Leipzig Heiterblick aerodrome/luftschiffhafen , Mockau)

general information :

During 1916. in an endeavour to meet the demand for better performance, the Aviatik C III was introduced. This machine, however, was little more than a refined C I. The nose contours were considerably cleaned up and a large spinner fixed to the propeller; a new exhaust manifold ejecting horizontally to starboard was also fitted. A further improvement was the installation of the new aerofoil-shape radiator in the starboard side of the top-wing centre-section. In addition to improving forward vision considerably, these refinements added some 18 km.hr. (11.25 m.p.h.) to the speed. The C.III, similar to the C.I version was not produced in great numbers – only 80 aircraft were built in the years 1916–1918. It was caused by the decision of the last months of 1916, to switch the factory's industrial capabilities to the licence production of a more modern and more useful DFW C.V. the Aviatik C.III aircraft were used in the German aviation units as reconnaissance machines and occasionally as escorts.
